Comments: Scott & Thomas (2005: 122) record this genus as a member of the Family Achnanthaceae.

Nomenclatural note
Cocconeis Ehrenberg included two designations, Cocconeis scutellum Ehrenberg and Cocconeis undulata Ehrenberg of which the former was selected as the lectotype by Boyer (1927: 242). Both of these species designations were invalid at the time of publicaiton of the genus and were not validated until the following year. But this did not invalidate the genus name, which dates from 1837. - (08 February 2025) - M.D. Guiry
